Vitamin B12 - for blood and mental function

Vitamin B12 plays an active role in the production of red blood cells, which in turn affect a variety of systems in the body. Vitamin B12 is also important for neurological properties, such as normal psychological functioning.

Mainly animal sources

To get vitamin B12, you need to eat a varied diet with mainly animal products such as fish, meat, seafood, eggs, liver, milk and cheese. B12 is also available in plant sources but this form is inactive so the body cannot absorb it.

Particularly important for vegans and the elderly

Since vegan diets exclude animal sources, vegans are generally at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency. Therefore, it is important for vegans to either take a supplement or choose foods fortified with vegan B12. Lacto-ovo vegetarians are also at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency since dairy products and eggs contain relatively little B12.
Older people can also suffer from vitamin B12 deficiency, mainly because the ability to absorb the vitamin decreases with age. It is therefore necessary to increase the dosage of supplements the older you are.

Supplemented with folic acid

Elexir vitamin B12 is supplemented with the bioavailable folic acid Quatrefolic®. This folic acid is absorbed three times faster than regular folic acid and enhances the absorption of vitamin B12.
Folic acid is also recommended during pregnancy, as it contributes to tissue growth in the pregnant woman. Elexir B12 is vegan and has a lemon flavour.

Why do older people and vegans need more B12?

-For the body to absorb B12 from the diet or supplements, a protein produced in the stomach, called "intrinsic factor", is needed. The older we get, the less intrinsic factor is produced, which reduces the absorption of B12. It therefore becomes more important to consume more B12 as we age. If you are vegan, you often get low amounts of B12 as B12 is only found in animals. Vegan products are sometimes fortified with B12 for this reason.

What is the difference between different forms of B12?

-There are two common forms of B12 in supplements, methylcobalamin and cyanocobalamin. Methylcobalamin is the most natural form and the one also found in food. It also seems to be taken care of better and more efficiently than cyanocobalamin and it starts to be absorbed already in the oral cavity.

Can you eat too much B12?

-There is no "upper level", i.e. maximum allowable dose, of B12. There is no evidence that high doses of B12 are harmful.

Why is there folic acid in our B-12?

-Phenolic acid is also known as vitamin B9 and interacts with vitamin B12 in a number of processes in the body and facilitates the function of B12.
