What is silicon?

Silicon is a trace element and the second most abundant element on Earth after oxygen. It is found in nature as silicon dioxide and in hydrated or aqueous form as silicic acid. Many people may know that silicon is a popular mineral for hair, skin and nails and is therefore often found in beauty supplements.
